At present nuclear industry uses a developed family of containers "COCON-BLOK" for storage and transportation of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) and for storage of solid radioactive waste. The transport packaging assembly includes an SNF storage package and a damping device for protecting it. The assembly includes a metal-concrete container, a spacing grid for SNF placement, ampoules or SNF covers.

The use of double-purpose concrete containers provides:

  • modularity and stage-by-stage organization of temporary storage facilities and the necessary set of containers as micro-storages;
  • possibility of sending SNF without reloading from the territory of temporary storage facilities to processing or disposal sites;
  • shortest terms for the construction of temporary solutions;
  • identification of contents of the container which was stored and moved through the control and accounting, ease of keeping the accounting and storage systems;
  • minimum degree of fuel degradation in dry conditions of storage and development of defects in spent or damaged fuel assemblies;
  • passive removal of residual heat from stored fuel;
  • low dose loads on personnel during SNF container loading / unloading operations and container operation;
  • reliable protection from environmental pollution;
  • absence of cooling water, which eliminates the leakage of radioactive water.
